The only people complaining about the new Star Trek movie are those who don’t understand the links between JJ’s version and the older movies. While I value the “new” fan’s opinions, I would encourage them to do research before spouting off. I would encourage anyone to do research before spouting…

Rrright…I’ve only just lived and breathed classic Trek since I was six years old. Devoured The Making of Star Trek by Whitfield and Roddenberry at nine, Gerrold’s in-depth account of the production of The Trouble With Tribbles at eleven, Winston, Lichtenberg’s Star Trek Lives and Gerrold’s critical dissection of Star Trek in The World of Star Trek at age twelve.

It gives me great pleasure to realize that people like me, who’ve spent decades engaging intellectually, critically, and analytically with the text, dissecting it and rebuilding it and engaging with it on a level greater than “oh, the feels” and “man, that was kick-ass” are “too new” or too stupid to understand the links between JJ’s revisioning and the ur-text that is Classic Trek.

People on our side of the dispute do indeed understand the links, and attention to story logic and character motivation, and a whole host of issues. We disagree with many of the artistic and creative choices that JJ and his “Supreme Court” have made. To us, Star Trek stands for more than exciting action set-pieces and cute guys making fangirls’ ovaries explode.

There’s an intellectual legacy - some might call it pretension - however hamfisted and clumsy it may have been of inquiry, exploration, and inclusive progressive liberal humanistic values.

It wasn’t always the exciting battle of heroes against charismatically over-the-top villains. Star Trek could encompass drama, tragedy, horror, farce, comedy, camp, and social commentary. From time to time, it did admittedly drop the ball, but it tried.

Just so this doesn’t just come across as gratuitous Abrams bashing. I thing that JJ Abrams would probably do very well on a revival/reboot of Universal’s Battlestar Galactica. I think he and his team would do wonders with the mixture of Star Wars style action and the mid-seventies Ancient Astronauts fad and could meld it into a cohesive and entertaining whole. I just don’t think that Abrams and Company were good philosophical fits for Star Trek, no matter how financially successful the first film was.

Honestly, in the run-up to ST:ID’s release, I’ve often found myself thinking back to the release of the second of Michael Bay’s TRANSFORMERS films. And I remember so many people who’d raved and simply LOVED the first film suddenly heaping scorn upon scorn on the sequel, despite the fact that every single criticism they made of the sequel was present in the first film, and usually in even greater volume!

I will admit to spending plenty a night hoping for the same reaction to this film, and that hoping said reaction has a much more noticeable effect on the box office receipts than happened with Bay’s franchise. :)

Anyway, the theme to Masada is good. Wasn’t it done by Jerry Goldsmith?

And, looking up the miniseries, I see it aired April 5-8, ‘81. Was it rerun later, do you know? I seem to recall it a little too strongly for having just turned 5.

It was “too philosophical” for JJ. It was clearly over his head as a child in a way that it was not over mine.

And, remember, the STAR TREK that made it to TV was supposed to have been more accessible to the general public than its “too cerebral” pilot, “The Cage”.

Unfortunately, if you dumb down STAR TREK too much, you get the infamous third season under Fred Freiberger.

What I would like to say to JJ Abrams if I ever had the opportunity is as follows:

JJ, It is right and proper for you to prefer the eye candy, adrenaline, and visceral pleasures of STAR WARS. If I were an executive at 20th Century Fox with a yen to revive and reboot LOST IN SPACE, you’d be the first person I’d call, JJ. Orcman and Kurtzi … sorry, Orci and Kurtzmann could hit that one out of the park in their sleep.

If I were at Universal and wanted a revival of BATTLESTAR GALACTICA more in tune with Glen A. Larson’s concepts, I would call you in a heartbeat without hesitation, JJ.

Unfortunately, from your first stab at STAR TREK, you, Lindeloff, and your associates just do not grok the nature of what makes good STAR TREK. What you made was a generically sci-fi popcorn film that is barely distinguishable from any other would-be sci-fi blockbuster of the last ten years and slapped STAR TREK names and catchphrases on it.

ST 2009 was a partial rehash of Harve Bennet’s godawful STARFLEET ACADEMY origin pitch. STID is another partial rehash of a better, more iconic film. The comic spin-off series that Orci has been involved with has spent much of its time retelling old television episodes within the new reboot universe. JJ, When are you going to take true advantage of the freedom a rebooted universe allows you to explore strange new worlds (and concepts) in STAR TREK and not merely regurgitate what we’ve seen many times before, but with a slight twist?

Bravo.
